Problem
Patient safety incident records piled up in a new Excel workbook every year. Department names were written differently by different people, so totals did not match, and monthly statistics and external reports had to be recounted by hand every time.
Constraints
- Patient safety data must not leave the hospital, so it had to be an installed program, not a web service.
- Several years of Excel workbooks had to be imported as they were.
- Records that used several names for the same department had to be merged.
Solution
- 1
The app stores data in a database on the PC, so information never leaves it.
- 2
It imports the existing Excel workbooks and risk register as they are, and an alias dictionary maps different spellings of department names to one, so totals match.
- 3
Monthly and annual totals and external report forms are generated automatically for download.
- 4
The aggregation logic is verified by tests that run without a real database.
